If you’re a child of the 80’s who successfully begged their parents for a Disney World trip, you were almost certainly blown away by Epcot’s sci-fi 3D movie “Captain EO.” Re-watching it on YouTube today, maybe not so much.
For one thing, the puppets all have a Chuck E. Cheese in space quality to them. In the beginning, that tiny robot checks out Michael Jackson’s butt. Michael, the most effeminate space captain ever, defeats a techno-spider-woman (Anjelica Huston!) by exposing his rainbow tattooed shirt to her. Also, who can forget that the attraction was taken down once MJ’s love of young boys hit the tabloids.
Still, watching this gives me a crazy rush of nostalgia, and “Another Part of Me” is a kick-ass song. Also, when they made this in 1986, they didn’t expect you to be watching it on non-3D YouTube. If you’re bummed about Michael today, definitely give this a watch. It’s hoaky, but awesomely so.
