Would you dare call the leader of the free world a “nerd” – right to his face? I might not, but it’s awesome that The Daily Show’s John Hodgman did.
Who better than the “PC” in those Mac commercials to call out Obama as a geek? As Hodgman points out at the TV & Radio Correspondents Dinner, Obama is a Blackberry addict, a comic book collector and knows the Vulcan salute. Later, after Obama fails Hodgman’s Dune trivia test, he concludes that maybe Obama is not a full-fledged dork, and goes on to make a point about how labels in the world are changing.
Frankly, I don’t think Hodgman should have backed down. At a time when superhero movies rule the box office and 11 million people play World of Warcraft, what greater feather could geeks have in our cosplay Mario caps than claiming the president is one of us?
